Tattooing

Tattooing is the practice of marking the skin by painting henna on for a semi-permanent result or depositing ink into the middle layer of the skin which once healed will be protected by the external skin and be visible to all. Tattooing is one of the oldest forms of body decoration and the practice has been utilised for a variety of reasons: protection, faith, ceremonial, shame, maturity, belonging to a group and attraction.

Tatts are associated with groups perceived as dangerous and have become symbols of masculinity, rebellion and rejection, some POZ(HIV+)men adopted an ‘in your face’ attitude having the bio hazard symbol tattooed on themselves to signal their HIV status. Tattoos are attractive and decorative, they can be traditional or a sophisticated art form. Tattoos and their owners can attract respect, attention and fascination by emphasising sexual appeal by drawing attention to the curves of the body or muscles making the owner feel sexy. Tattoos can be sexually explicit, some individuals state you can get addicted to getting inked to the point only small areas are left blank.

Aftercare

If you’ve just got a new tattoo keep it wrapped for the first 2-3 hours, then wash by splashing with warm soapy water, don’t soak the tattoo in water. Do not rub the tattoo with a wash cloth or towel, instead gently pat dry with a paper towel and apply a thin layer of Bepanthan cream. Apply cream 2-3 times a day. Tattoos usually take 2-4 weeks to heal, during this time it is important not to go swimming , don’t scratch or pick peeling skin or scabs.

If broken skin and non-sterile equipment or unhygienic practises come into contact, there is a high risk for transmission of blood borne viruses such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. In Victoria it is illegal to tattoo anyone under the age of 18. It is possible to get and pass on HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C as well as other bacterial infections while getting a tattoo though contaminated equipment, unclean premises and unsafe practices. It is highly recommended to use only registered certified tattooists to be sure they comply with the current best practices guidelines.

Remember a tattoo, except for temporary ones is a permanent form of body art so it is important to take time to think about what you’re having done. It is very expensive and time consuming to remove an unwanted tattoo with laser and it’s not always 100% effective.

For more information on tattoos visit your local registered tattoo artists and ask questions, you will find them very helpful and collaborative.
